It is better to pull the cord out, instead of cutting it. Just pull it out gently, slowly and with a slight twisting action. Also, make sure that there is not some sort of agreement or spiritual contract there, or the cord will just reattached shortly after disconnection. If there is a contract and you want it to end, say so to the Universe or to that person's spirit and it will be done. That is unless the cord is attached to your root chakra from one of your own young children, and then it would be appropriate and impossible to keep severed.
