I want to write a thesis about Capital Punishment. I would like to prove that race and economic status do influence public support for capital punishment. What do you think of this topic? Will my research be bias? Will I be able to prove this? Please give me some feedback and suggestion.
I am a graduate student. Unfortunately, the MPA program at my university does not emphasize on research---they focus on exams and application. I am just want to do an independence study on how to write a thesis. The professor said, ';Okay, they will help me. Before picking the topic--- I want your suggestion.
Please help. Thank you very much for your kindness.
Sorry for the poor grammar--English is my second language. Please advice. 10 points for the best advice. Thank you?
perhaps look at thesis that have been written already as samples for structure / form. it could be a different subject or position than yours . any model would be helpful for you to review. why not ask instructer where you can see one that has been done already ?
proof ... race and economic status / i think you can find solid statistics from the rates / races of those incarcerated. i think it is about 3/4 of prison population is black , hispanic is the next race. white / american / indian / asian / other is the least ? you have to check these facts to be sure that you have right.
the argument is made that these people are economically disadvantaged and do not have access to the best attorneys.
interesting that a government feels they can punish by taking a life / murder / they . they have the same law that punish people for taking a life. not sure who gives them the right ?
i do not personally support capital punishment / there have been a lot of mistakes discovered. DNA has proved a lot of the guilty have been innocent for years. Please advice. 10 points for the best advice. Thank you?
I think you will find in your research that it is not race and economic status that influence public support for capitol punishment, but the statistics show that many people who are sentenced to death because of their crimes are members of minorities and of lower class economical status.
Part of your thesis should entail a thorough examination and analysis of these statistics, and how they give the appearance of racial and economic status influencing captitol punishment sentencings.
I actually debated this issue (affirmative and negative) and did a 25 page thesis on this subject. I can assure you public support for capital punishment has very little to do with economic status and/or race. You need to research this further.
i think it is ok. it might be bias though. But you can prove this.
Your school library and the web will have all you need on the subject. But don't go into it with the preconceived notion that race makes a difference. For example it is a fact that blacks commit a disproportionate % of crime given their population. If, therefore, more die by Capital Punishment than whites, it is not necessarily a matter of racism! Don't try to fit the facts to a particular thesis. Just a suggestion.
I am afraid that you will have a very difficult time proving that race and economic status influence support for capital punishment. Typically the type of crime is what determines the support of capital punishment. I would find another topic to write about or you may become very frusterated. Good luck.
Aren't you biased to begin with? To start research with a race or financial standing is prejudiced to begin with. I think it would be a good idea for you to check out the website for the innocence project. Then maybe you can get an idea of why there is such a problem with capitol punishment. It might be a good idea to research how many innocent people have been killed or were in immediate danger of it.
