What is the best advice you have ever gotten from anyone?

My father (bless his heart) told me to always pay attention to what people say when they're angry or how they handle disappointment, because that's when you find out who they really are. And my mother taught me to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. What is the best advice you have ever gotten from anyone?
