My father (bless his heart) told me to always pay attention to what people say when they're angry or how they handle disappointment, because that's when you find out who they really are. Probably the best advice I ever received was from a teacher at Queens College. The crucial part involved avoiding the passive voice and not using adverbs when writing. It has affected almost everything I've written since.
